For dry beans, saute the following:
2 T. vegetable oil, heated
1 large yellow onion
4 cloves garlic, crushed
salt pork or corned beef if wanted
½ t. salt
2 t. pepper
4 bay leaves
2 ½ quarts water
Add to 4 c. dried black beans soaked overnight.
Or…just add the above ingredients to a can of black beans.
Serve over rice. To add flavor to rice, heat vegetable oil, onion and garlic until golden. Add dry rice, stir, then add water and cook as usual.

We actually use about 3 cans of black beans for our family and use those same ingredients with them. Todd and Jake REALLY like them. Jason not so much.
